Question: What should a Florida small-business owner review now for the 2026 tax year?

Short answer: Start with the changes that affect records and decisions before year-end: the 2026 federal standard deduction, the $2,000 information-return threshold for qualifying business payments, and depreciation, payroll, credit, and entity-specific decisions that depend on your facts.

Start with records that cannot be recreated later

Set a monthly close, reconcile business accounts, retain invoices and contracts, keep personal and business spending separate, and collect Forms W-9 before vendor records become difficult to repair.

For 2026, the federal standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers, $32,200 for married couples filing jointly, and $24,150 for heads of household. A tax projection should model the whole return rather than one deduction in isolation.

Include Florida items in the same review

Florida does not impose a personal income tax, but a Florida C corporation can be subject to corporate income tax. The Florida corporate-return instructions show a $50,000 Florida exemption; entity classification and multistate facts can change the result.

Florida commercial-rent tax was repealed for occupancy periods beginning on or after October 1, 2025, subject to stated exclusions and prior-period rules. Check a lease invoice before assuming every charge is affected.

Put information reporting on the calendar

For payments made after December 31, 2025, the statutory threshold for certain Forms 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC is $2,000 for 2026 and is indexed for later years. Track legal name, tax classification, W-9 status, payment total, payment method, and the reason any payee is excluded.

Review purchases and payroll together

Equipment, software, vehicles, and improvements can have different tax treatment depending on business use, placed-in-service date, taxable income, and elections. Review material purchases before committing cash.

An S-corporation owner who provides services generally needs reasonable compensation before non-wage distributions. Review payroll, draws, benefits, retirement contributions, and health-insurance reporting together.

Include pass-through deductions in the projection

Some owners of sole proprietorships, partnerships, and S corporations may be eligible for a section 199A qualified-business-income deduction. For tax years beginning after 2025, the law adds a $400 minimum deduction and a $1,000 minimum QBI requirement, with later inflation adjustments. Eligibility and the amount are fact-dependent.
